2024 Jeep Recon SUV: Is Jeep Coming Out With A Recon SUV? Jeep has just made public its design for an all-electric off-road SUV called the Jeep Recon. Our first question was whether this was a precursor to the pure electric Jeep Wrangler that we know is eventually coming, or if this was an all-new model going forward.
Additionally, we wanted to know what these new Jeep EVs mean for the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid that was just launched a year ago and has proven to be quite successful.
We recently got down with the Chief Executive Officer of the Jeep brand, Christian Meunier, in Detroit to obtain some answers and gain a better view of the future product strategy as Jeep transitions to a complete electric vehicle (EV) range of SUVs by the end of the decade.
No Threat To The King
To begin, Meunier makes it quite obvious that the Wrangler will continue to advance, and that nothing will unseat it as the king, regardless of the engine.
While the Wrangler will continue to provide a choice between a traditional gas-powered engine and a plug-in hybrid powertrain for some years to come, the Recon will be a fully electric vehicle when it is finally released in 2025.
Even when the Wrangler is only available as an electric vehicle, it will remain the most capable off-road vehicle. The head of Jeep boasts that the Wrangler has a trail rating of 10, making it superior to other vehicles in its category and earning it the title of “king.” “The Recon is going to be a very excellent competitor, but it is not going to be as good as it is going to be.”
Meunier claims that the size of the Recon is comparable to that of the Wrangler, despite the fact that the actual specifications of the vehicle have not been made public. Both of these vehicles are built for off-road exploration and getting out into nature, and both have the capability of having panels removed to create an open-air environment.
New Jeep Recon Exterior And Colors
The 2024 Jeep Recon is very obviously influenced by the legendary Wrangler, and it maintains some of the familiar appearance and presence that we are used to. However, we will be the first to confess that we also sense a glimpse of Ford Bronco Sport in the design of this vehicle.
However, the modern external design of the Jeep Recon is being hailed as evidence of the progression of where the brand has been, and the Recon is more of an exclamation point on the aesthetic trip that has been taken up to this time. Then, it appears appropriate to have an illuminated seven-slot grille.
Similar to a Wrangler, the Recon will feature doors and windows that can be removed, in addition to a motorized roof that can be opened with just one touch. The exposed door hinges are not only a characteristic of a classic style, but they also facilitate the removal of the doors in a more straightforward manner.
The under-body protection, blue tow hooks, and tough off-road tires that come standard on the Recon are all designed to fulfill the requirement that the SUV should be able to perform as well as the Wrangler does in harsh, undeveloped environments. We see the same steep approach and departure angles as well as overhangs, all of which point to the aircraft’s exceptional capability.
Although Jeep has not provided us with information on the color palette for the new Jeep Recon SUV, we have seen it in lime and bottle green, an olive color that is more outdoorsy, and a gray color that is more elegant, and all of these colors are surprisingly appropriate to the way that it appears.
In some of the press shots, the hood can be seen to have a distinct blue border around it. Additionally, we have been given the assurance that, similar to previous Jeeps, it will provide a great deal of personalization options.
Jeep Bros, Not Foes
Is the purpose of the Recon just to acclimate people to the idea of a Jeep with a battery-powered drivetrain and get the ball rolling for the Wrangler BEV? Not at all, according to Meunier; they were conceived to complement one another. “We call them brothers, but they are different in style.
There is a similarity in that you can take the doors, windows, and top off. However, they each have a very own personality, and that will remain the case.”
“I believe the two products are going to be extremely complimentary,” Meunier adds, but they will provide distinct experiences. This will be first driven by the fact that their powertrains will be different. “We feel there is a tremendous possibility for the two to co-exist for a period of time, but over time there will also be a Wrangler BEV,” adds Meunier.
“We believe there is a huge potential for the two to co-exist for a period of time.” He won’t specify when the Wrangler and the Recon will both be exclusively powered by electric motors. As a result of the introduction of the Recon, the Wrangler may not be updated until the latter half of this decade, when Jeep will have already shifted its portfolio to consist entirely of electric vehicles, which the company refers to as 4xe models.
Meunier believes that the Recon and the Wrangler will appeal to distinct groups of customers. Both are anticipated to bring in buyers who are unfamiliar with the brand, as has been the case with the Wrangler 4xe, which has sold a significant number of vehicles to people who have never owned a Jeep before. He believes that Recon will raise the pace of conquest to a whole new level.
Recon Built In North America
Both the Recon and another newcomer, a midsize Wagoneer now known only by the codename S until it receives a true name in a future competition for Jeep fans, will be manufactured in North America. The car manufacturer has not yet disclosed either vehicle’s manufacturing location.
Meunier mentions that two new battery facilities are going to be built in Kokomo, Indiana, and Windsor, Ontario, so that they can supply whatever future assembly plants end up being responsible for the new electric vehicles.
The majority of the choices about the production process have been taken, but there are still a few that need to be completed. They will be launched first in North America, where they will be constructed, and then they will be sent to Europe.
The STLA Large platform, which will also be used by the Wagoneer S EV, will be used by the carmaker for the production of the Recon. This platform enables an all-electric driving range of up to 400 miles on a single charge.
Meunier believes that the Wagoneer S EV will most certainly reach that goal, but that the Recon will receive a shorter range than the Wagoneer S EV due to its boxy shape to some margin.
The STLA Large platform is shaping out to be fairly adaptable in its capacity to handle both sides of the SUV range, with a swoopier, faster, more urban Wagoneer S and the more rugged Recon. These two vehicles will share the same underpinnings.
Jeep is on a quest to become a global leader in the electrified SUV industry, and they are starting today by revealing a plan for its next generation of completely electric “4xe” cars. This is only the beginning of Jeep’s endeavors to achieve this goal. It is anticipated that the Jeep Recon would be the first brand-new electric car to hit the market in 2024.
The new electric Jeep will only be offered as a battery electric vehicle, so there is no need to keep waiting for a variant that runs on gasoline to appear on the market. Don’t worry, however; the car manufacturer intends to preserve its tough image even when it transitions to zero-emission vehicles.
According to a press release issued by Stellantis, the 2024 Jeep Recon will come standard with improved off-roading capabilities. These capabilities will include trail-rated capability with the Jeep Selec-Terrain traction management system, e-locker axle technology, underbody protection, tow hooks, and off-road tires, among other things.
The Recon will also come standard with a powertop that can be opened at the press of a button, doors and glass that can be removed, and the newest edition of the Uconnect system, which will include trail directions for popular off-road routes.
The outside of the 2024 Jeep Recon has a form that is similar of the present Jeep Renegade and a size that is comparable to that of the Grand Cherokee; however, we do not yet have any confirmation of its specifications. The sport-utility vehicle will be of moderate size and should include seating for five people.
2024 Jeep Recon SUV: What We Know So Far
