2024 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid: Everything We Know So Far – With the release of the CX-50 in the latter half of 2021, Mazda joined other manufacturers in selling a small SUV with limited off-road credential. Or, at the very least, they made it appear the part by blacking out the side cladding, fender flares, wheels, and trim on the vehicle.
But without anything to back it up other than aesthetics, the top-trim CX-50 Premium Plus that we just reviewed provides nothing to separate it from its CX-5 sister other than design that is both more forceful and voluptuous.
Because it is built on a separate platform but has proportions that are comparable to those of the CX-5 both inside and out, the CX-50 does not provide a discernible improvement in the amount of space available for passengers or goods. It does, however, inherit some of the positive features that we enjoy in previous Mazda vehicles, such as solid road handling, snappy steering with a nice feel, and a well-appointed, upmarket cabin. These attributes are inherited from the Mazda MX-5 Miata.
Even though it has standard all-wheel drive with additional driving modes that include an option for off-road travel, the 20-inch street tires on the CX-50 that we tested really weren’t happy venturing very far from the pavement, despite the fact that the exterior has been reshaped and some cosmetic changes have been made.
However, with its smaller, more aggressive tires and other extra equipment, the Meridian trim level has the potential to reverse this perception. If you aren’t taken with the appearance of the CX-50 and the additional feature available, including Mazda’s first panoramic sunroof, you could be better suited with a CX-5, which is priced lower.
The new alliance between Mazda and Toyota is already being put to good use by Mazda. The 2022 Mazda CX-50 will be the first vehicle to be manufactured in the United States at the combined Mazda Toyota Manufacturing factory in Huntsville, Alabama. It will enter the market the following year with a tough exterior design, a stylish interior, and two different engine choices to choose from.
